Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long do I have to be a mentor?
A: Mentors and mentees are asked to make a 12 month commitment. After the initial 12 months, the mentor, mentee, parent and staff will sit down together to determine if either party wishes to continue the mentoring relationship.
Q: Why do I have to have a criminal background check?
A: Our funding support requires that each mentor have a background check to ensure the safety of the young people in our program. However, having a criminal history does not automatically eliminate you from being a mentor. Each case is individually considered in terms of type of conviction, length of time since the conviction and other related aspects.
Q: How much time do I have to spend with my mentee?
A: Although most mentors spend more, each mentor is required to spend one hour per week face-to-face time with their mentee.
Q: How long does it take to become a mentor?
A: Once the application is submitted, the mentor dictates the speed of the process and has the ability to get trained and matched within as little as 2-4 weeks.
